What are Taoist Tai Chi® arts?

Taoist Tai Chi® arts are a spiritual practice that include movements such as Tai Chi as well as chanting and meditation. At their heart is Taoist tradition as taught by our founder, Master Moy Lin Shin.  All who are interested are welcome to participate as they choose, including as volunteers. How do I begin?

If you are interested, please look for an introductory session near you. Everyone is welcome. No prior experience or knowledge is needed. The session leader will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

What happens in an introductory session?

Session leaders introduce the Taoist Tai Chi® arts to participants and help them find balance and feel comfortable in the movements. They also introduce broader aspects of Taoist Tai Chi® practice.

Who is the session leader?

All our session leaders are volunteers who maintain accreditation through ongoing training.

What is the introductory session format?

Sessions are generally held once a week for two hours. Other formats may be offered depending on the location. Please view options available at your nearest location.

Do you have health and safety protocols in place?

Our health and safety protocols follow guidance provided by national and provincial health officials. Specific questions can be addressed by contacting the location.

What should I wear?

We recommend flat shoes and comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely.

Is there a cost?

Participants support the organization by paying contributions. Your contributions allow you to attend sessions of Taoist Tai Chi® arts at any location around the world. Contact your nearest location for contribution amounts.

Are sessions open to all?

We encourage people of all ages and abilities to participate. If you are or may be pregnant, please consult with your physician and your session leader before beginning your Taoist Tai Chi® practice.

What if I don’t have a good memory or I’m not coordinated?

Having a good memory and being well coordinated are not needed to learn the movements of Taoist Tai Chi® practice. Many people find that their cognitive ability and coordination improves. All are welcome! 

What if I have health or mobility challenges?

Most people can practice Taoist Tai Chi® arts, including those with health or mobility challenges. They find that they make significant gains with regular practice. If you do have a serious health condition, please consult with your physician and your session leader before beginning. Accessibility will vary between locations so ask prior to arrival about the specifics of your location.

Are there opportunities to learn beyond regular sessions?

We offer programs and retreats, ranging from 3 hours to 5 days, which provide an opportunity to work on these profound arts at a deeper level. We encourage you to attend events near you, in other cities, and at our International Centre.

Can I learn Taoist Tai Chi® arts using videos or books?

Videos and books can serve as aids to learning but do not replace the role of a trained leader who can offer guidance and support as you progress in your practice.
