Festivals and Ceremonies

As is common for temples in Chinese culture, Fung Loy Kok facilities serve as places for a wide range of activities oriented both towards members and the public. Many festivals are held at a variety of Fung Loy Kok locations around the world, with the largest taking place at the International Centre. Large scale ceremonies are conducted at Chinese New Year, the Lantern Festival, the Festival for All Souls, and the Health, Longevity and Reconciliation Festival. These include Confucian and Taoist chanting as well as vegetarian (jai) banquets for a thousand people or more.

In addition, other festivals celebrated over the course of the year include the birthdays of Guanyin, the lord of the Heavenly Realm, the Lord of the Water Realm, the Jade Emperor, Immortal Lü, Wong Dai-sin and many others. On the 1st and 15th day of each lunar month, Taoist chanting is held to seek blessings from Dou Mu (the mother of all stars).

A highlight of the many festivals are the vegetarian (jai) meals. For many years, Fung Loy Kok has become known for regularly welcoming the public for jai meals of the highest quality, prepared by chefs with decades of experience in both Hong Kong and the West. In addition to banquets at the festivals and large events, jai meals are often provided to groups that visit our locations.

In order to pay respect to those who have passed away, temple members chant for funerals and memorial services at the family’s request, and memorial plaques may be purchased at any time throughout the year. These plaques are permanently installed in the Fung Loy Kok Memorial Halls.
